How do you compare adapter load capacity specs?

Two adapters can share a watt rating and still leave load capacity unwritten. Ask for a full-load voltage curve, or for load-test data that names voltage as the load steps from light to full.

A repair-shop or OEM buyer ranking notebook adapters by unit price is not asking which carton prints 65 W. Rated power is a nameplate — output voltage times output current. Load capacity is whether that voltage stays inside a named band when the host actually draws current. Those are different cells. The method below names the extra paper. It does not invent a transformer fill percentage, a capacitor in microfarads, or a sag in millivolts.

Why does a matching watt line not settle the buy?

It leaves voltage under load unread. Rated watts name the product the seller put on the sheet; they do not say whether the output sags, holds, or trips when the notebook draws that current. Load regulation — the change in output voltage from minimum load to full load — is a separate datasheet cell, and a quote that only repeats 65 W has not written it. Ranking two SKUs — stock-keeping units, one sellable revision each — by whether both PDFs print the same watts is still a miss: the nameplates match, the load-capacity cell does not.

Ask whether a full-load voltage curve, or stepped load-test data, sits on the same confirmation. A cheaper watt line does not become a load-capacity pass because the unit price is lower.

What inside the adapter actually decides load behaviour?

A high-frequency transformer and the capacitors that store energy around it decide whether voltage holds under load. A watt line on the quote does not size those parts. The transformer has to transfer the energy; the bulk capacitor after the rectifier, and the output filter capacitors, have to hold it between switching cycles. Two adapters can print the same watts and still behave differently because those parts never appear on the nameplate. Do not invent a fill percentage or a microfarad as a house figure.

Mean Well's Switching Power Supply Technical Manual, read 6 September 2026 at power-supplies.com.au/files/mean-well-user-technical-manual.pdf, describes an off-line switcher in section 1.2: it rectifies AC mains into a bulk capacitor — the large storage capacitor after the bridge rectifier — chops that DC with a high-frequency transistor, converts it through a high-frequency transformer, then rectifies and filters to DC. Isolation transformer T1, in the same worked block list, isolates and steps the voltage; temperature rise and safety withstand are the design considerations named there. Section 2.2 and 2.3 name the bulk capacitor after the bridge rectifier. Output rectification in the worked example uses filter capacitors on the secondary. This topology note is one published SPS description, not a claim that every notebook adapter uses that exact block list.

What extra paper actually compares load capacity?

A full-load voltage curve, or load-test data that names voltage at stepped loads, is the extra paper. Load regulation is the named datasheet cell besides rated power: how much output voltage moves from minimum load to full load. A 62368 safety file does not write that cell. A USB-IF Type-C source test can show one published load-step shape, but it does not replace the curve on this SKU. Until voltage under load is named, matching watts stays unread.

Mean Well technical manual section 2.9, read 6 September 2026, states that load regulation is the variation in output voltage corresponding to a change in output load between the minimum value and the full value, and that high output current generally leads to a slight voltage drop at the output terminal. Section 2.6 defines the voltage measurement at the output terminal of the supply; measuring at the load end adds wiring drop. Mean Well's GSM40A medical adaptor specification, GSM40A-spec.pdf on meanwell-web.com, read 6 September 2026, lists LOAD REGULATION as its own row beside RATED POWER and RIPPLE & NOISE. Naming that row is not a millivolt table. Do not copy a percentage from that sheet onto a quote.

UL 62368-1, Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment – Part 1: Safety requirements, Fourth Edition shop page dated 31 July 2025 at shopulstandards.com, read 6 September 2026, states that the document does not include requirements for performance or functional characteristics of equipment. IEC 62368-1 / EN IEC 62368-1 is the safety paper used on notebook-adapter LVD files. It is not a load-capacity pass. A seller who only attaches 62368 has not written the curve.

USB-IF's USB Type-C Source Power Test Specification, 24 May 2021, usb.org USB-C Source Power Test Specification 2021 05 24.pdf, read 6 September 2026, describes one published load-step shape: after tSrcReady — the ready delay after the voltage transition — the test enables the maximum load in 25% increments and checks that if the source voltage leaves vSrcNew, the tighter band, it stays inside vSrcValid, the wider allowed band, and returns within tSrcTransient, the allowed recovery time. That is a compliance-test procedure for USB Type-C sources. It is not a MILDTRANS method. It does not become a house millivolt. Do not copy the 330 mV hub-port droop line from the same family of USB papers onto a notebook-adapter confirmation.

The extra paper on a supplier comparison is then voltage at full load, and voltage as the load steps. Hold-up time — how long the output stays up after AC is removed — is a related capacitor question in Mean Well section 2.12. It is still not the watt line. Do not copy the manual's general 16 ms note as a house specification.

How do ordinary adapter matching cells sit beside that curve?

They sit on top of the curve; they do not replace it. Industry matching still writes voltage, capacity, power, charge and discharge behaviour, internal resistance, protection, interface, load capability, and PD protocol — Power Delivery, the USB charging handshake. Load capability is one cell on that list. A power cell that only repeats watts has not filled load capability, and the curve does not fill interface or PD. The list is a general check frame, not a named house method.

Battery and adapter warranty is 12 months. Notebook-adapter CE-series papers include LVD to EN IEC 62368-1. EMC, RoHS, and LVD papers on sold categories are held by the associated company Shenzhen Glory Energytech Co., Ltd. (深圳市荣焕科技有限公司). That LVD paper is a safety file. It is not a load-regulation pass. Do not write those CE numbers as a full-load curve.

Mixed models start at five pieces, or two for a trial. Ordinary outbound time is 7–15 days. Same-day is not the standing policy. Money moves as T/T — telegraphic transfer — through HSBC. A two-piece trial can start an adapter SKU that names the full-load curve, not a carton that only repeats watts. A bulk invoice that only attaches a 62368 PDF is not a substitute for voltage under load.

How do a watts-only line and a full-load curve sit side by side?

They are not the same kind of paper, and treating them as interchangeable is how a watts-only quote slips through before the first bulk T/T. The table below is that check. If a seller will only quote rated watts, leave the load-capacity column unused. A complete sheet names voltage at full load, or voltage at stepped loads. A cheaper watt figure does not become a load pass because the unit price is lower.
