Why do laptop screens use eDP instead of LVDS?
Laptop screens moved to eDP because it carries more bandwidth than LVDS, with thinner cables and lower power. Interface type is a higher-priority compatibility check than size. Do not treat a size-only listing as the interface-type check.
A laptop panel is the screen. The link is how the main board talks to that screen. eDP — Embedded DisplayPort — is the newer internal panel link, derived from DisplayPort. LVDS — Low-Voltage Differential Signaling — is the older internal panel link. An interface-type check names whether the replacement panel is eDP or LVDS, matching the link the board actually drives. A size-only listing names the diagonal — the inch figure across the screen — and stops there. Put those two on the same listing. Do not judge the panel by size alone.
Why laptop screens left LVDS
They use eDP because it carries more bandwidth for higher resolution and refresh: more picture data, for a sharper image updated more often, on thinner cables and at lower power than the older LVDS link. The industry moved over years from LVDS to eDP as the mainstream laptop-panel interface. Size can still match on both. Matching inches is not a named link.
The usual miss is to read a matching diagonal as if the link had already been named. Asking for the same inch size does not, by itself, tell you whether the board expects eDP or LVDS. The buyer still has to see whether the file names the interface, or whether size was treated as the pass.
Why a 10 September 2012 VESA page splits eDP from ageing LVDS
A Video Electronics Standards Association page splits eDP from ageing LVDS because eDP was written as the replacement internal link, while LVDS was already limited on capability, voltage and wireless interference. That is why newer laptop screens use eDP instead of LVDS. A size-only listing is not that split.
The page titled Mobile Battery Life and Display Performance Improves with Upcoming Release of eDP 1.4, dated 10 September 2012 and read 15 September 2026, says eDP was first introduced in 2009 as an extension of DisplayPort and was developed to replace the ageing LVDS embedded display interface. In 2010, AMD and Intel announced they would phase out LVDS support in next-generation chip sets by 2013 in favour of eDP, because of LVDS’ limited capabilities, higher voltage-level requirements, and excessive interference with system wireless communication functions.
Those Version 1.4 names, Panel Self-Refresh, the October 2012 release and 2014 commercial-product dates stay on that page. They do not name the lot in front of you. The split here remains an interface-type check versus a size-only listing.
Interface type versus a size-only listing
Split whether the panel is eDP or LVDS from whether the diagonal matches. Interface type is the higher-priority compatibility check. Newer laptop screens are typically eDP. Older laptop screens are typically LVDS. An eDP panel and an LVDS panel can still share the same inch figure. The inch figure does not name the link.
Until the interface-type check sits beside size, a matching diagonal can be misread as a seated panel — a screen that will fit and be driven as a working replacement. Repeating “it is the same size” does not answer whether the board expects eDP or LVDS. A listing that only repeats the inch size, without saying eDP or LVDS, has not finished the compatibility check.
Check | Interface-type check | Size-only listing |
What the line names | Whether the panel is eDP or LVDS | The diagonal size |
Newer laptop screens | Typically eDP | Size can still match |
Older laptop screens | Typically LVDS | Size can still match |
Written status on the lot | eDP or LVDS named in writing | Inch figure only |
Name both checks on the same listing. Here the two checks already sit on different lines. We still name eDP versus LVDS in writing before size is treated as the pass. LCD — liquid-crystal display — checks on this desk include model, version, size, resolution and interface. An Armenia shipment checked the interface in writing before the buy, so a wrong link was not purchased. That lot is named only at country level. It shows the channel already asks for interface in writing. It does not treat the inch figure as the pass.
What to ask before size is treated as the pass
Ask which check sits on the listing; whether the panel is eDP or LVDS; and whether size was treated as the pass. Ask for those fields in writing. If the seller answers only with the inch figure, they have not named the interface-type check.
Write the interface-type check and the size line on the same listing. Ask whether the board expects eDP or LVDS when the diagonal already matches. A seller who answers only with size has not answered the split.
How this desk names the two checks
Here an interface-type check and a size-only listing sit on different lines. We do not treat a matching diagonal as a seated panel. The interface-type check still has to sit beside size before eDP and LVDS are treated as interchangeable. Skipping the written link because the inch figure already matches leaves unnamed the process the board actually drives.
We still name eDP versus LVDS in writing before size is treated as the pass. The Armenia lot named above already asked for the interface before the buy. That is not a claim every seller writes the same connector drawing.
We are a buying-and-shipping house, not a factory. Shenzhen Mildtrans Industrial Co., Ltd. (深圳市中川实业有限公司) has been on the mainland register since 2004. Mildtrans Industrial Co., Limited (中川实业投资有限公司) has been on the Hong Kong SAR, China register since 2010. Most receipts use the Hong Kong name. Our five core families are LCD — liquid-crystal display — battery, adapter, keyboard and housing.
Regular categories start at five pieces, with a trial of two, mixed models accepted. Ordinary outbound is 7–15 days. That clock is the buying path. It does not replace an interface-type check versus a size-only listing. Payment through this desk is T/T — telegraphic transfer, a bank transfer sent by the buyer. A letter of credit — a bank payment against shipping documents — is refused. None of those commercial rows replace the two checks.
Key facts
These seven facts answer the same split. Laptop screens moved to eDP because it carries more bandwidth than LVDS, with thinner cables and lower power. An interface-type check is a higher-priority compatibility check than size. A size-only listing is not that check.
· eDP means Embedded DisplayPort, the newer internal panel link.
· LVDS means Low-Voltage Differential Signaling, the older internal panel link.
· Interface type is a higher-priority compatibility check than size.
· A 10 September 2012 VESA page says eDP was developed to replace ageing LVDS.
· That page records AMD and Intel phasing out LVDS support in next-generation chip sets by 2013.
· This desk still names eDP versus LVDS in writing before size is treated as the pass.
· LCD checks here include model, version, size, resolution and interface.
FAQ
Why did laptop screens leave LVDS for eDP?
Because eDP carries more bandwidth for higher resolution and refresh, with thinner cables and lower power. A 10 September 2012 VESA page already names eDP as the replacement for ageing LVDS. Size can still match on both links. The interface-type check is the higher-priority compatibility check.
Does a matching inch size mean the panel will seat?
No. A size-only listing names the diagonal and stops there. eDP and LVDS can share the same inch figure. Until the interface-type check sits beside it, size is not the pass.
What does an interface-type check name that size does not?
It names whether the panel is eDP or LVDS, matching the link the board actually drives. Size remains a second line. The two links can share the same inch figure.
Do the eDP 1.4 names on the VESA page replace the two checks?
No. The 10 September 2012 page uses Version 1.4, Panel Self-Refresh and later commercial-product dates. Those names stay on that page. The split here is still an interface-type check versus a size-only listing.
Does a 7–15 day outbound clock tell you whether the panel is eDP or LVDS?
No. That clock is the buying path. The split is an interface-type check versus a size-only listing, not the outbound window. Ordinary outbound here is 7–15 days on regular categories; that figure does not name the link.
