How do you choose between a whole laptop keyboard and a single-keycap repair?
One dead letter on a laptop does not decide the parts line. A cracked keycap — the plastic face you press — or a broken scissor, the small retainer that keeps that key level, can fail while every other key still types. That is a plastic failure. A torn flex, the ribbon that carries key signals, a dead membrane contact, a backlight that will not light, or ghost typing across many keys is an electrical failure. The two are not interchangeable, and neither one, on its own, tells a repair-shop buyer whether to stock a carton of caps or a whole keyboard.
The construction does. If the keyboard is fused to the palm rest — the C-cover the hands rest on — a one-key repair still opens a cover the maker sells as one leftover spare. The job starts to look like a whole-unit swap. If the module lifts off and the ribbon unplugs, a cap-and-scissor kit covers that plastic failure only.
A buyer ranking keyboard lines by unit price is not asking which carton looks smallest. A small carton of caps on a fused keyboard still leaves the shop opening a top cover that official spare lists sell as one piece. What follows names two constructions. It does not invent a labour hour, a unit price, or a percentage that says when a cap kit pays back.
Why one broken key does not settle the buy
Until you name the construction, you are ranking two unlike parts.
The parts path follows whether that model's flex is independent of the keyboard module. Independent means the module lifts off the palm rest and the ribbon unplugs. Fused means the keyboard is one piece with that cover. Ranking a cap kit against a whole keyboard without naming which construction the SKU uses — stock-keeping unit, one sellable revision — is still a miss.
Fused to the palm rest: the leftover spare is the cover
On a fused chassis the official spare is not a board you lift out.
HP Maintenance and Service Guide, First Edition July 2021, Document Part Number M73804-001, read 6 September 2026 at kaas.hpcloud.hp.com/pdf-public/pdf_12142015_en-US-1.pdf, lists the spare as Keyboard with top cover. The guide states that the top cover with keyboard remains after removing all other spare parts from the computer. The same catalogue does not list a single keycap or scissor as an HP spare. Naming that document number is not a price. Spare-part numbers from it do not belong on a quote.
A one-key repair on that construction still opens a cover the maker sells as one leftover spare. Shops that follow the spare list then stock complete keyboards, or keyboard-with-palm-rest, as the matching line. A cap kit can still cover a missing letter on a board that otherwise types. It does not become the stocked line for every fused chassis. This MSG is one published fused example, not a claim that every HP notebook uses the same spare.
Independent flex: the module comes off; the palm rest stays
On an independent construction the keyboard is a module you can take off the palm rest. The official Lenovo task puts the board on that cover, then the connectors come off. The palm rest stays. The ribbon unplugs. You are not forced to buy the C-cover to change the board.
Lenovo's user-guide task Remove the keyboard for ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD, and ThinkPad T16 Gen 3, on download.lenovo.com/manual/thinkpad_t14g5_t16g3_p14sg5/ug/html_en/en/Remove_the_keyboard_(task).html, copyright Lenovo 2023, read 6 September 2026, writes the sequence: loosen the screws; push to release the latches from the keyboard bezel; pivot and turn it over; put the keyboard on the palm rest and detach the connectors; then remove the keyboard. The ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 Hardware Maintenance Manual states that the keyboard assembly comes with the cables.
A whole-board swap on that construction is a module swap, not a C-cover swap. A cap-and-scissor kit is then the lower parts spend for a missing, worn, or broken cap or retainer only. Those ThinkPad pages are one published independent-module example, not a claim that every ThinkPad uses the same construction. The connectors do not yield a pin-count here, and the steps do not yield a time in minutes.
When a cap kit is even on the table
Only when the failure is the plastic on one key, and the rest of the board still types. A keycap-and-scissor kit does not repair a torn flex, a failed membrane contact, backlight failure, or ghost typing across many keys. Electrical failures still take the whole module, even when the module is removable.
Official OEM spare lists that name a keyboard assembly, or a keyboard-with-top-cover, and do not name a keycap FRU — field-replaceable unit, the spare the maker stocks — are the public signal for which construction the model uses. Ask which construction the SKU is before ranking a cap kit against a whole keyboard. No public source found on the HP MSG or the Lenovo keyboard-removal page for a labour-hour table or a unit-price index that says when a cap kit pays back. That table is not filled in here.
A whole-keyboard quote still has to fill the matching cells that buyers already use on this category: language layout, key function, bounce, backlight, flex specification, and TrackPoint or fingerprint extras. That list is a general check frame, not a named house method. A cap kit does not fill flex, backlight, or layout for the rest of the board.
Where a disclosed keyboard-and-palm-rest pair sits
A disclosed pair can name the families a house actually stocks. It still has to say which family matches the chassis construction.
MILDTRANS is a buying-and-shipping house, not a factory. Keyboards and housings are core sold lines. Outbound keyboard checks are written as language layout, key function, bounce, backlight, flex, and TrackPoint or fingerprint. Those checks can sit on a confirmation. They are not a zero-error claim.
The public site mtscreen.com lists Laptop Keyboard as a product family and a separate Laptop Palmrest family under Laptop Cover. An English keyboard product page, read 6 September 2026, asks buyers to verify brand and model, original layout, backlight or not, and cable-connector position and shape on the back of the original keyboard, and states each keyboard undergoes key-function and cable-connector testing before shipment. Those two families can sit on a confirmation as keyboard versus palm-rest / housing. They do not invent a pin-count or a labour hour. A buyer can still ask which construction the SKU uses.
Shenzhen Mildtrans Industrial Co., Ltd. (深圳市中川实业有限公司) dates from 2004. Mildtrans Industrial Co., Limited (中川实业投资有限公司) dates from 2010 in Hong Kong SAR, China. Most invoices use the Hong Kong name. Mixed models start at five pieces, or two for a trial. Ordinary outbound time is 7–15 days. Same-day is not the standing policy. Money moves as T/T — telegraphic transfer — through HSBC. A letter of credit is refused. Brazil is not on operated DDP.
A two-piece trial can start the right family: a lift-out keyboard module, or a keyboard-with-palm-rest on a fused chassis. A bulk invoice that only repeats a cap-kit line is not a substitute for that construction.
Fused spare and lift-out module, side by side
They are not the same kind of paper. The table below is the check before the first bulk T/T. If a seller will only quote a cap kit on a fused chassis, leave that column unused. A complete sheet names which construction applies. A smaller cap carton does not become a fused-chassis pass because the unit price is lower.
Question | Fused keyboard-with-top-cover | Lift-out keyboard module | HP MSG M73804-001 / Lenovo keyboard-removal page (6 Sep 2026) | Stop |
What is the spare? | Keyboard plus palm rest / top cover as one leftover part | Keyboard module; palm rest stays | HP: top cover with keyboard remains. Lenovo: put keyboard on palm rest, detach connectors | One SKU family for both |
Where does the flex sit? | Not sold as a board you unplug from the cover | Independent; assembly comes with the cables | Lenovo HMM: keyboard assembly comes with the cables | Verbal 'it is a keyboard' |
When is a cap kit the parts line? | Only a missing letter on a board that still types; not the stocked spare | Cap and scissor for that failure only | Neither page lists a keycap FRU | Cap kit ranked by unit price alone |
When is the whole board the parts line? | The shop stocks complete keyboards or keyboard-with-palm-rest | Module swap for torn flex, membrane, backlight, or ghost typing | no public source found for a labour-hour or payback table | Hours or a percentage invented |
What matching cells remain? | Layout, function, bounce, backlight, flex, TrackPoint or fingerprint | Same cells on the module | not a house QC table | Cap kit treated as those cells |
Does a MILDTRANS pair replace the buyer check? | No. It names keyboard and palm-rest families | Keyboard family versus housing / palm rest, on confirmation | not a pass-rate | Pair treated as a zero-error claim |
If the seller quotes only a cap kit on a fused chassis
Leave that sheet unused. Ask which construction the SKU uses. A price cut does not create a lift-out module, and it does not write the flex cell. Until the construction is named, treat a fused-chassis quote that only repeats a cap-kit line as unread. The same stop applies if the seller invents a labour hour or a payback percentage. No public source found on the two OEM pages above for that table.
Key Facts
· A broken keycap or scissor does not by itself choose a whole keyboard or a cap kit.
· The split is whether the flex is independent of the keyboard module, or the keyboard is fused to the palm rest.
· HP MSG M73804-001 (July 2021, read 6 September 2026) lists Keyboard with top cover as the leftover spare.
· Lenovo's 2023 keyboard-removal task for T14 Gen 5 / P14s Gen 5 AMD / T16 Gen 3 has the module sit on the palm rest while the connectors come off.
· A cap kit does not repair a torn flex, a dead membrane, backlight failure, or ghost typing.
· MILDTRANS writes outbound keyboard checks that include the flex, and lists keyboards and palm-rest / housing as separate families. They are not a zero-error claim and do not invent counts.
· A two-piece trial can start the right family. Ordinary outbound is still 7–15 days.
FAQ
How do you choose between a whole laptop keyboard and a single-keycap repair?
Name the construction first. If the keyboard is one piece with the palm rest, a one-key repair approaches a whole-unit swap, so shops stock complete keyboards or keyboard-with-palm-rest. If the module lifts off and the flex unplugs, a cap-and-scissor kit is the lower parts spend for a broken cap or retainer only. Hours and a unit price do not force that split.
Does a missing letter always mean a cap kit?
No. A cap kit covers a missing, worn, or broken cap or scissor on a board that still types. It does not cover a torn flex, a failed membrane, backlight failure, or ghost typing. Those failures take the whole module even when the module is removable.
What does fused to the palm rest mean on a spare list?
It means the leftover spare after other parts come out is still keyboard-with-top-cover. HP MSG M73804-001, read 6 September 2026, states that the top cover with keyboard remains after removing all other spare parts. That catalogue does not list a keycap FRU. Naming the document is not a price.
What does an independent flex look like in a service task?
The keyboard comes off the bezel, sits on the palm rest, and the connectors detach. Lenovo's Remove the keyboard task for ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, P14s Gen 5 AMD, and T16 Gen 3, read 6 September 2026, writes those steps. The T14 Gen 7 HMM states the keyboard assembly comes with the cables. The connectors do not yield a pin-count here.
Does a MILDTRANS pair of families prove zero keyboard faults?
No. The disclosed keyboard list and the palm-rest / housing family name inspectable dimensions and stocked lines. They can sit on a confirmation. They do not invent a pin-count or a labour hour, and they are not a zero-error or pass-rate claim. A buyer can still ask which construction the SKU uses.
Can a two-piece trial skip naming the construction?
No. Mixed models can start at two pieces for a trial. That trial can start the right family. It does not turn a cap-kit quote into a fused-chassis pass. Ordinary outbound time remains 7–15 days. Same-day is not the standing policy.
